Solomon Islands – Schools Without Books Project

E-mail Print

The Schools Without Books Project is about getting books suitable for children under 18 to as many of the islands schools as possible.  Some of these schools are little more than seats under a tree and have very few educational resources.  Resourcing of schools in general is not high with some school libraries having fewer than 30 books with no new books received in recent years.  Transport between some of the 900+ islands is generally by canoe which further complicates getting resources to the schools.

Book Sale Poster

Books collected are from schools and public libraries around Victoria.  Books suitable for Solomon Islands are boxed up for shipping.  All other books go to the book sale.

Hoppers Crossing Apex is managing the book sale with Project Uplift. Proceeds from the book sale go towards funding the shipping and delivery of the books.  It costs $6000 to send a shipping container to Solomon Islands.

If you can’t make this one the next book sale is on 15th November so put it in your diaries to check the website www.hopperscrossingapex.org.au closer to the date.
